Kurt Senske’s “Must Read” List

I am often asked, “What books do you recommend I read?”  Sometimes the questioner is searching for his calling; on occasion it is a college student on the same search.  Other times, it may be a corporate executive or a non-profit leader with a desire to improve his or her game.  Often the conversation drifts toward wine or a good summer beach read.  Below is a partial list of what has recently inspired (and kept me company) on my spiritual, educational, and geographical journeys.  I hope that one or more may enhance your own personal journey.   ...

Another Side of BP

We are all painfully aware of the toll that the BP oil spill has taken on those who live along the Gulf Coast. Livelihoods have been profoundly impacted, the ecosystem and wildlife received a significant body blow, and the cleanup will take years.  There continues to be anger and distrust aimed at everyone BP employs, assuming a widespread guilt by association....

Living a Life of Significance in the Age of Paris Hilton and Howard Stern

In past lives, both my wife Laurie and I played in the fringes of the celebrity circuit. She as an actress, and I via my professional role of helping celebrities such as Michael J. Fox, Richard Gere, Olympia Dukakis, Mark Hamill, and others participate in the political process as they, with the best intentions, strove to use their celebrity status to influence the political decisions of others....

News Flash – Al and Tipper Gore Separate; Irene and Billy Clements Continue to Serve

During my stint in national politics in the late 80s I had an opportunity to meet then presidential candidate Al Gore along with his wife Tipper prior to a presidential debate.  The two were gracious to a fault even after learning that I was employed by a competitor.  It is safe to say that we were all stunned to learn recently about the pending dissolution of their forty year marriage.   We recalled their romantic long kiss before millions of viewers on the stage of the 2000 Democratic National Convention.   No matter what our politics we appreciated their portrayal of a warm, loving, devoted couple – a sharp contrast to the Clinton marriage after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke....

Sandra Bullock, Jesse James and Living a Life of Significance

A couple of years ago my wife, Laurie and I had a chance, very random, truly enjoyable dinner with two adorable, hopelessly in love (at the time) newlyweds, whom you might have heard of – Sandra Bullock and Jesse James.   We ran into them at Bess, an Austin restaurant owned by Sandra and named after her grandmother.   Sandra and Jesse joined us while we ate at the bar and the four of us ended up having  a lively, fun, and wide ranging conversation.   I have to admit that I struggled a bit to add any value when the table talk turned to tattoos and fast cars....

I Am Tiger Woods

I am fascinated by the man we simply call Tiger.  What I respect most is his never ending quest for perfection on the golf course.   He is the best golfer in the world and still continues to relentlessly strive to improve his game.   We can all learn from his work ethic as we strive to enhance our own God given talents....
